Crystal Palace legend Sir Gareth Southgate has turned down every opportunity for media work and punditry during the World Cup to ensure there were no unnecessary distractions or media-fuelled narratives surrounding Thomas Tuchel and the England squad.
Even after stepping down as England manager, he has once again put the team's interests ahead of his own. That's exactly what we've come to expect from a thoroughly decent man whose priority has always been England, not himself.
However far this team goes in the USA, let's never forget who laid the foundations. Southgate rebuilt the culture, restored belief, united the nation behind the team, and left England in a far stronger position than he found it.
His influence didn't end when he left the job. Even now, he's doing everything he can to help England succeed.
